CORTICOSTEROIDS

SUMMARY:

Methylprednisolone is a corticosteroid used to treat inflammation or immune reactions across a variety of organ systems, endocrine conditions, and neoplastic diseases.

 

INDICATION:

Methylprednisolone is an FDA-approved medication for the management and treatment of allergic conditions, arthritis, asthma exacerbations, long-term asthma maintenance, acute exacerbation of multiple sclerosis, and as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent.

 

PHARMACODYNAMICS:

Absorption : Methylprednisolone sodium succinate is rapidly absorbed after intramuscular or intravenous administration.

Distribution : It distributes widely into tissues, crosses the blood-brain barrier, and is bound to plasma proteins.

Metabolism : Methylprednisolone is metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.

Elimination: The drug is primarily eliminated via the kidneys.

Protein Binding: Methylprednisolone is moderately bound to plasma proteins.

Half Life: The half-life of methylprednisolone is about 18-26 hours.

 

MECHANISM OF ACTION:

It exerts its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, leading to altered gene expression.

 

PHARMACODYNAMICS:

Methylprednisolone suppresses inflammation and immune responses by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators.

 

CAUTIONS:

Caution is advised in patients with infections, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, or peptic ulcers.

 

METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION:

It can be administered intramuscularly or intravenously.

 

OVERDOSE AND TREATMENT:

Overdose may lead to Cushing’s syndrome; treatment involves supportive care and symptomatic management.

 

IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:

Use during pregnancy or lactation is generally avoided unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

 

TOXICITY:

Potential toxicity includes adrenal suppression, fluid retention, psychiatric effects, and increased susceptibility to infections.

 

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONS :

The dosing regimen varies depending on the condition being treated. Typical dosing may range from 125-500mg every 6-12 hours for severe conditions. Always follow the specific dosing instructions provided by a healthcare provider.
