SUMMARY:
Hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid used to treat corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, endocrine disorders, immune conditions, and allergic disorders.
INDICATION:
-Hydrocortisone is used to treat certain medical conditions, such as inflammation (swelling), severe allergic reactions, kidney diseases, adrenal problems, arthritis, blood or bone marrow problems, eye or vision problems, lung or breathing problems (eg, asthma), lupus, skin conditions, and ulcerative colitis.
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Absorption : Hydrocortisone sodium succinate is rapidly absorbed after IM/IV administration.
Distribution : It distributes widely into tissues and crosses the blood-brain barrier.
Metabolism : Hydrocortisone is metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
Elimination: : It is primarily eliminated by the liver and excreted in the urine.
Protein Binding: Hydrocortisone has a high protein binding capacity.
Half Life: The half-life of hydrocortisone is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It acts by binding to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, leading to anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Hydrocortisone suppresses the immune response and reduces inflammation.
CAUTIONS:
Caution should be taken in patients with systemic fungal infections, peptic ulcers, and diabetes.
METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION:
It is administered via IM or IV injection. .
OVERDOSE AND TREATMENT:
Overdose can lead to Cushing’s syndrome; treatment involves supportive care and symptom management.
IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
It is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and lactation under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
TOXICITY:
Prolonged use can lead to adrenal suppression, osteoporosis, and increased susceptibility to infections.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONS:
