SUMMARY:
Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin indicated for the treatment of a variety of infections including acute bacterial otitis media, several upper respiratory tract infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, early Lyme disease, and impetigo.
INDICATION:
For the treatment of many different types of bacterial infections such as bronchitis, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, skin infections, gonorrhea, and urinary tract infections.
PHARMACOKINETICS:
Absorption : Cefuroxime (as sodium) is rapidly absorbed after reconstitution.
Distribution : Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids.
Metabolism : Minimal metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Elimination: Renal excretion.
Protein Binding: Approximately 33-50% bound to plasma proteins.
Half Life: Approximately 1-2 hours.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death.
PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Effective against a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
CAUTIONS:
Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy; monitor for signs of superinfection.
METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION:
Reconstituted and administered intravenously or intramuscularly.
OVERDOSE AND TREATMENT:
May cause seizures; treatment involves supportive care and symptomatic management.
IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Generally considered safe; consult a healthcare provider for specific cases.
TOXICITY:
Rare, but may include allergic reactions and gastrointestinal disturbances.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
50 mg every 8 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection.
