Levocent (Levofloxacin)

LEVOFLOXACIN 

500 mg / 100 mL (0.5% w/v) Solution for I.V. Infusion 
Antibacterial (Quinolone) 

SUMMARY:
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria of the upper respiratory tract, skin and skin structures, urinary tract, and prostate, as well as for post-exposure treatment of inhaled anthrax and the plague


INDICATION:
Treatment for:

  •  Community - acquired pneumonia
  •  Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
  •  Pyelonephritis and complicated urinary tract infections 
  •  Chronic bacterial prostatitis

 

PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Absorption :    Levofloxacin is well absorbed after intravenous infusion administration. 
Distribution :  : It distributes widely into tissues and body fluids, including the lungs, kidneys, and prostate.  
Metabolism : Levofloxacin undergoes limited metabolism in the liver.
Elimination: It is primarily eliminated unchanged in the urine.
Protein Binding:  Levofloxacin has a moderate protein binding capacity.
Half Life:   The half-life of levofloxacin is approximately 6 to 8 hours. 


MECHANISM OF ACTION:
It inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to bacterial cell death.


PHARMACODYNAMICS:
Levofloxacin exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. 


CAUTIONS:
Should be taken in patients with a history of tendon disorders, myasthenia gravis, or seizures. 


METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION:
It is administered via intravenous infusion.  


OVERDOSE AND TREATMENT:
Overdose may lead to neurological symptoms; treatment involves supportive care and monitoring.


IN PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:
Levofloxacin is generally not recommended during pregnancy and lactation due to potential adverse effects on fetal development.


TOXICITY:
Potential adverse effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system effects, and tendon rupture. 


DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONS:
The typical dosing for levofloxacin is 500mg to 750mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment. Always follow the specific dosing instructions provided by a healthcare provider.
